TAM 2009 MEETING, Montpellier 14-16 October 2009

Dear HPC-Europa2 visitor, SUSP member, HPC-Europa2 colleague,

We are pleased to invite you to the TAM (Transnational Access Meeting) to be held in Montpellier on October 14th – 16th 2009. All HPC-Europa2 visitors are invited to present the work that they have done during their visit, either as a poster or a talk. The main part of the TAM will take place on 15th-16th October. After two keynote talks, these days will be dedicated to the HPC-Europa2 visitors' presentations. Additionally, for the first time at a TAM, we are pleased to offer an optional pre-conference technical workshop, for those who are interested in increasing their knowledge of multi-core programming and getting some "hands-on" experience.

Optional one-day workshop on Exploiting Multi-core Processors: Challenges and Programming Models (14th October)
Multi-core technology is becoming ubiquitous, with dual-core processors now commonplace in the laptop and desktop, and processors with four, eight and more cores coming soon. As clock speeds are no longer increasing, the only way for an application to benefit from these new processors is by re-engineering it to run on more than one core. Parallel programming, once the preserve of high-end supercomputing, is now an essential tool for almost every software developer.
EPCC will be running a one-day pre-conference multi-core workshop at TAM 2009. This will introduce the basic concepts of multi-core processors and the associated issues for multi-core software and will cover parallel software for multi-core processors. The focus will mainly be on the OpenMP programming model.
The workshop will be heavily based on practical sessions, with hands-on exercises accompanying the lectures. *Attendees will need to bring a laptop*, preferably multi-core (although this is not essential). We will provide advice on suitable compilers for common operating systems in advance. Although the programming techniques taught are applicable to a wide range of software, we will concentrate on applications that are very compute-intensive such as large-scale numerical calculations or data processing.
The ability to program in C, C++ or Fortran will be helpful, however we will provide example codes for attendees who are not confident programmers.
